From Mexico by way of San Diego, Wilfrido Terrazas is a flautist and multi-instrumentalist, composer, and improviser of exceptional breadth and depth. I’ve been enjoying his Pirate Songs immensely - a highlight of which, Song for Peter, is played in multiple arrangements, demonstrating its memorable main theme’s mutability and underlying beauty in a variety of contexts.
Wilfrido will be improvising this performance with trombonist Michael Dessen, bassist Kathryn Schulmeister, and drummer Tina Raymond.

Bassist Kathryn Schulmeister presents “Perspectives of the Bass,” a diverse program of music ranging from classical to contemporary that features the unique expressive potential of the double bass. Joined by pianist Nick Sanders, drummer Julien Cantelm, and vocalist Jasper Sussman, this program takes you on a sonic journey from Appalachian folk-inspired chamber music to contemporary jazz and beyond. Join us for an evening of adventurous music making featuring the majestic sound world of the double bass!
This concert series highlights emerging groups or artists within the San Diego region. The project is supported by an advisory committee that includes GRAMMY Award winning producer and UCSD faculty member Kamau Kenyatta, CSUSM Professor and Center ARTES Executive Director Dr. Merryl Goldberg, Grossmont College Music Department Chair Derek Cannon, Emmy Award-winning composer and MiraCosta College faculty member Christy Coobatis, and Connections Chamber Music Series Co-Founder Bridget Dolkas.

Fonema is proud to present the world premiere of Yuunohui'sa the final piece in Mexican composer Julio Estrada’s monumental work, the Yuunohui cycle. Yuunohui’sa was commissioned with the friendly support of the Ernst von Siemens Foundation. The program also features an exceprt from Estrada’s opera Murmullos de Páramo, “Mictlan”, as well as a rarely heard work by Argentinian composer Graciela Paraskevaídis (Sin ir más lejos) and Pabo Chin’s Three Burials. We are grateful for the support of the Mexican Cultural Institute of Washington D.C. for presenting and supporting this performance.
